Nick Kyrgios Provisionally Suspended After Positive Cocaine Test
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended after a sample he provided at an ATP tournament in Majorca in June tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. Kyrgios said he accepted responsibility and described the result as a huge mistake. He said injuries over the past two years had affected him physically and mentally, and that he would step away from social media and public life for 28 days. The International Tennis Integrity Agency said cocaine is prohibited in competition under tennis anti-doping rules. Kyrgios may appeal the suspension, but no appeal had been lodged at the time of the announcement. The former Wimbledon finalist is currently ranked 919th in the world.
