Wawrinka Bids Emotional Farewell to US Open After Missing Final-Season Wildcard

Stan Wawrinka has paid tribute to the US Open after missing out on a main-draw wildcard for what he says will be his final professional season. The 2016 US Open champion received wildcards for the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year, but will not return to Flushing Meadows. The decision ends his Grand Slam run in New York, where he made 17 men’s singles appearances from 2005. Wawrinka said New York became one of his favourite cities and recalled the battles, late nights and passionate support he experienced there. He described winning the 2016 title as one of the greatest moments of his career. The former world number three has struggled with injuries and declining form in recent years, dropping outside the top 100.
