Six Lessons From the Book of Joshua: Faith, Obedience and Spiritual Rest
The Book of Joshua opens with God encouraging Joshua to lead Israel after Moses’ death: “Be strong and courageous.” Joshua’s story shows that leadership requires courage, moral discipline and commitment to God’s word. Israel witnessed fresh miracles as they crossed the River Jordan, but victory at Jericho was followed by defeat at Ai. The contrast warns against overconfidence, disobedience and assuming that past victories guarantee future success. Achan’s actions also show how private wrongdoing can affect a wider community. Joshua’s encounter with the commander of the Lord’s army reminds believers that God is not bound by ethnicity, nationality or religious appearance. His faithfulness rests on His covenant and calls for obedience. Israel later settled for incomplete conquest, and the remaining nations drew them towards idolatry. The book ultimately teaches that every generation must know God personally. The promised land was not simply a place of ease; it required holiness, consecration and faithful obedience. Joshua’s incomplete rest also points forward to the deeper rest spoken of in Hebrews.
