Report: NAF Aircraft Was Grounded in Benin Over Engine Fault Before Ondo Crash
Fresh reports indicate that Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft NAF 931 developed an engine fault after landing in Benin City on Sunday while travelling from Abuja to Lagos. Sources said the aircraft remained grounded overnight for repairs. The aircraft reportedly departed Benin for Lagos on Monday after technicians said the fault had been rectified. It lost contact with air traffic controllers shortly after take-off and later crashed in the Obe-Rebby swamp area of Igbokoda, Ondo State. Sources also questioned the initial description of the flight as a routine Benin-to-Lagos mission, claiming some passengers had boarded in Abuja and were due to continue to Lagos. The Nigerian Air Force had not publicly confirmed these claims at the time of the report. The report further notes that NAF 931 had previously undergone prolonged maintenance in Germany before returning to Nigeria in late 2024. Rescue operations were still ongoing, while the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
