Nigerian Woman Questions Why Basic Comforts Are Treated as Major Achievements
A Nigerian woman has criticised what she describes as the normalisation of deprivation in the country. She said many people now treat owning an iPhone, a luxury car or other basic comforts as proof of extraordinary success. She argued that in countries with functional systems, such items are more accessible and do not attract the same level of social-media competition. According to her, the pressure to display wealth is particularly intense in Lagos, where people may feel excluded if they cannot maintain a certain image. She also criticised politicians who present basic amenities, including hospital beds and motorcycle tyres, as major accomplishments. She said Nigerians should demand better standards of living rather than celebrate what ought to be ordinary provisions.
