Spiritual Performance Is Not Character: What to Watch for Before Marriage

I once worked at a church-owned television station where some people seemed more focused on performing spirituality than living with integrity. A blocked toilet, allegedly caused by flushed condoms, exposed the gap between public holiness and private behaviour. It taught me that religious appearance is not the same as character. When relationships are involved, we should not be carried away by fluent Scripture quotes, tongues, church uniforms or impressive prayers. Someone can learn to perform Christianity long enough to win trust, while hiding dishonesty, poor boundaries or values that contradict yours. Let people speak freely, disagree and reveal how they think. Watch how they behave when they are frustrated, how they treat people who cannot help them, and how they handle money, truth, power and boundaries. Faith matters, but spiritual maturity must be reflected in character. Do not fall in love with a version of someone created by expectations. Give people enough room to show who they truly are before making a serious commitment.
