How to Recognize the Prophet of Eli in the Bible
I begin by explaining why I avoid using the English word “God” for the Holy One of Israel. That term comes from proto-Germanic roots linked to idols. It was only later adopted by Christianity as the Creator, which I believe is inaccurate. Eli, by contrast, is a Hebrew name meaning “my creator” (El “creator” + I “my”). It also appears as a form of Elijah and bears a relation to the Arabic name Ali. To understand Eli’s prophet, we must also consider the divine name YHWH. Early Hebrew texts use these four letters. Since it lacks vowels, scholars often say “Yahweh.” When Eli sends a true prophet, he grants a seal bearing the name of the Holy One of Israel. That seal proves the messenger’s authenticity. In my next post, I will list those individuals who carried Eli’s seal and served as his prophets.
