Wike’s Aide Says Some 2027 Presidential Candidates Are Only ‘Registering Their Presence’

Lere Olayinka, a media aide to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, says not all candidates expected to contest the 2027 presidential election are running with a realistic expectation of winning. Speaking during a television interview, Olayinka argued that a large number of candidates on the ballot does not automatically translate to a competitive race. He said some candidates enter elections mainly to establish political relevance. He cited Omoyele Sowore’s 2023 vote total and questioned the national reach of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, which he linked to Peter Obi. According to Olayinka, presidential hopefuls need strong nationwide structures, polling-unit agents and grassroots mobilisers to compete effectively.
