Atiku Cites Buhari Precedent, Demands Suspension of Gbajabiamila for Probe

Atiku Cites Buhari Precedent, Demands Suspension of Gbajabiamila for Probe

Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to suspend his chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. He says this will allow an unfettered investigation into growing corruption allegations. The former vice-president pointed to Buhari’s 2017 suspension of SGF Babachir Lawal over contract award abuses. He argues Tinubu’s administration should treat Gbajabiamila the same way to uphold the rule of law. Allegations include illegally cornering billions in oil and gas royalties and accepting a ₦400 million bribe for an appointment letter. Atiku warns that ignoring these claims while prosecuting opposition figures would undermine anti-corruption efforts. He insists Gbajabiamila must face independent scrutiny to defend himself, calling on the presidency to follow past practice and ensure transparency.

Suspension alone won't guarantee an unbiased probe, it might just delay accountability without addressing deeper governance flaws.

A quick win could be publishing a clear timeline for the investigation and criteria for reinstatement or removal.
