Primary School Is Not a Race: Why Strong Foundations Matter for Every Child
Primary school is where children build the skills they need for the rest of their education. Before they can handle subjects such as Science, Literature and advanced Mathematics, they must be able to read with understanding, write clearly, follow instructions and solve basic problems. Parents should look beyond promotion to the next class. A child moving from Primary 3 to Primary 4 does not always mean real progress has been made. Ask what the child can now do independently, especially in reading, writing, spoken English, handwriting and Mathematics. Schools also need to focus on learning, not just attractive facilities, examination results or promotion records. When a child struggles with basic skills, early support is important. Extra lessons, assessments and targeted help may be better than allowing a learning gap to grow. Education is not a race. It is better for a child to master the foundation at the right pace than to advance through school without the skills needed for the next stage. Parents and school owners must work together to ensure every child is truly prepared.
