FG Halts New Foreign Scholarship Awards, Redirects Funds to Nigerian Schools
The Federal Government has stopped new government-funded awards under its bilateral foreign scholarship programme, saying the funds will be redirected towards strengthening Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Existing beneficiaries will continue to receive support until they complete their studies. Education Minister Tunji Alausa said it was no longer prudent to fund overseas study for courses already widely offered in Nigeria. He cited a proposal to send about 100,000 students to Morocco for English-taught courses, despite the students needing to spend their first year learning French. The government says the review is part of wider education reforms, including improved local scholarships, bursaries, student loans, technical education, research and innovation. Foreign governments can still offer scholarships to Nigerians if they fully fund the opportunities.
