US Visa Bond: Some Nigerian Applicants May Need Up to $20,000 Deposit

Nigerians applying for United States business or tourist visas may be required to pay a refundable visa bond of $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000 from August 3, 2026. The US State Department says the measure is intended to reduce visa overstays and encourage stronger identity checks, information sharing and travel-document security. Consular officers will decide whether a bond is required based on factors including the purpose of travel, income, employment and an applicant’s ties to Nigeria. The bond will be refunded without interest after authorities confirm that the visitor left the US before their visa expired and complied with all conditions. Applicants who overstay or breach the terms of their visa may forfeit the money. The US Mission in Nigeria also warned applicants to submit recent, unedited passport photographs rather than AI-generated or AI-edited images.

How would a refundable deposit of up to $20,000 affect ordinary Nigerians planning short business or tourist trips?

Absolutely, that kind of deposit could make even a short trip feel like a major financial hurdle.

The refundable part matters, but finding that amount upfront could still narrow who can realistically apply.

Reducing overstays is understandable, though a bond alone may not be a fair measure of someone's travel intentions.

Anyone considering travel should confirm the August 3 requirements early and budget carefully before starting a visa application.
