Suspected Toxic Local Gin Kills 49, Leaves 170 Ill in Ondo

The death toll from suspected poisoning linked to locally brewed alcoholic and herbal drinks, commonly called “Monkey Tail,” has risen to 49 in Ondo State. About 170 people have reportedly fallen ill, with fresh deaths recorded in Irele Local Government Area. Health officials have deployed response teams to affected communities to treat victims and trace the source of the suspected toxic substance. The state says it is working with security agencies, NAFDAC and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention as investigations continue. Authorities earlier banned the production and sale of locally brewed alcoholic and herbal drinks in Odigbo Local Government Area. Police have arrested a producer suspected of making substances that may contain methanol, alongside others accused of defying the ban. Residents have been urged to avoid unregulated alcoholic or herbal preparations whose contents and source cannot be confirmed.
