Lagos Adds 20 CNG Buses as Government Pushes for Cheaper Transport
Lagos has received 20 high-capacity CNG buses for its regulated public transport system. The buses were handed over to LAMATA on September 30 and are expected to serve busy routes, including the Ikorodu-to-TBS corridor. The delivery raises Lagos’ CNG bus fleet to about 170. Transport officials say the additional buses should increase capacity, reduce waiting times and help keep fares from rising despite higher diesel costs. The Federal Government is promoting CNG and electric vehicles as cheaper alternatives following the removal of petrol subsidy. It says about 120,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG so far, while further refuelling stations and gas infrastructure are planned nationwide. Lagos aims to have 52 per cent of its Bus Rapid Transit fleet powered by clean energy by 2050.
