Court Upholds Bordeaux’s Relegation to France’s Sixth Tier
The Paris Administrative Court has upheld the French Football Federation’s decision to exclude Girondins de Bordeaux from the national championships. The former Ligue 1 champions will compete in Régional 1, the sixth tier of French football, in the 2026/27 season. The decision follows Bordeaux’s 2024 bankruptcy proceedings and loss of professional status. A proposed takeover and debt-settlement plan reportedly failed to overturn the disciplinary sanction. Founded in 1881, Bordeaux are six-time French champions and have featured stars including Zinedine Zidane, Mauricio Pochettino, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Jules Koundé. The club must now begin a difficult rebuild from amateur football.
