Why Lazarus’ Resurrection Was Not Wasted Even Though He Died Again
If Lazarus later died again, why did Jesus raise him? John 11 presents the miracle as more than a temporary return to earthly life. Jesus prayed so that those present would believe that the Father had sent Him. Many who witnessed Lazarus come out of the tomb believed in Christ. The miracle also revealed Jesus as “the Resurrection and the Life.” Lazarus had been dead for four days, yet Christ called him out of the grave. His resurrection showed that death is subject to Christ’s authority and pointed ahead to Jesus’ own resurrection. Lazarus’ later death did not erase the purpose of the miracle. The extra time he received had value, and the sign brought faith, hope and a clear warning to those who witnessed it. A temporary restoration of life can still fulfil an eternal purpose. The account also challenges everyone still alive to use their time wisely. Scripture teaches that a day is coming when all the dead will rise to face judgment. The central question remains the one Jesus asked Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life. Do you believe this?”
