I frequently see social-media reports about bandit attacks, terrorism and alleged mass killings in Nigeria. Some posts contain disturbing images or videos and claim that dozens of people have been killed. What confuses me is the apparent lack of sustained public outrage or large protests after many of these reports. This has made me question how much of the content circulating online is verified and whether some accounts exaggerate or misrepresent events for attention. However, insecurity is a serious issue that requires careful verification, responsible reporting and attention to affected communities. The absence of a viral protest does not by itself prove that an incident did not occur.
