Wike, APC Governors and the Fight Over Who Controls the Party’s Political Space

A Yoruba proverb warns that when a problem is left unchecked, it can grow powerful enough to overwhelm those who should have stopped it. That proverb captures the APC’s uneasy relationship with Nyesom Wike, an FCT minister who remains publicly identified with the PDP but wields major influence within the Tinubu administration. The dispute has deepened as Wike challenges APC governors and builds alliances that may support candidates outside the party in several states. APC governors argue that party members cannot be expected to deliver votes for President Bola Tinubu while political structures are being built against APC candidates at state and legislative levels. I argue that the APC cannot treat Wike as an outsider when convenient and rely on his influence when it is useful. If his cross-party role is part of a wider arrangement for Tinubu’s re-election, the party should state its position clearly and define the limits of that arrangement. The controversy raises a broader question about political institutions in Nigeria: when party boundaries and formal structures are repeatedly blurred, who truly holds authority? The APC governors may have to decide whether to confront Wike’s growing influence or accept the political consequences of allowing it to expand.
