Super Falcons Miss 2027 Women’s World Cup After 2-1 Defeat to South Africa

Super Falcons Miss 2027 Women’s World Cup After 2-1 Defeat to South Africa — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the race for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in Casablanca. The result ends Nigeria’s record of qualifying for every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began. South Africa took control through goals from Thembi Kgatlana and captain Refiloe Jane. Nigeria pulled one back late after Jane was sent off for handball in the penalty area, with Christy Ucheibe converting the resulting penalty. Despite playing against 10 women in stoppage time, the Falcons could not find an equaliser. The loss follows Nigeria’s disappointing WAFCON campaign, including a quarter-final defeat to Cameroon that forced the team into the play-off route. South Africa will progress in the inter-confederation play-offs, while Nigeria must now confront major questions over coaching, preparation, administration and player development.
