Zimbabwe Commando Soldier Jailed for Night‐time Robbery of Catholic Priest
A member of Zimbabwe’s Commando Regiment has been sentenced to four years behind bars after pleading guilty to robbing a Catholic priest during a pre-dawn raid. Thirty-one-year-old Gwenyaya of 1 Commando Regiment appeared before Rusape Magistrates’ Court and admitted forcing entry into Father Mashati’s home on December 8. He and two accomplices, armed with a shovel, iron bar and knife, overpowered the priest and stole his mobile phone. Police intercepted Gwenyaya shortly after the raid and recovered a live cartridge. He was found guilty of robbery and unlawful possession of ammunition. His four-year term follows a five-year sentence with one year suspended. A fine of US$300 was also imposed, with default leading to four months’ extra imprisonment.
