Ondo High Court Hangs Vulcaniser for Killing Phone Theft Suspect
An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure has sentenced vulcaniser Wasiu Ibrahim to death by hanging for the murder of Joseph Odunayo over an alleged stolen phone. Justice Ademola Enikuomehin found Ibrahim guilty of murder and conspiracy after the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court heard that Odunayo was accused of stealing an Infinix phone on December 25, 2024. He was detained by the phone’s owner, Lekan Falohun, Ibrahim and others, who forced him to lead them to the buyer. After jumping from a moving motorcycle and injuring himself, he was recaptured on December 31 and beaten until he collapsed. He later died at a police clinic when officers declined to detain him due to his critical condition. Rejecting Ibrahim’s claim that he was merely an okada rider hired for the day, the judge relied on unshaken eyewitness testimony that identified Ibrahim as a leading assailant. The court also handed him two years for conspiracy and condemned all forms of mob justice. The judge urged the police to arrest Lekan Falohun and other suspects still at large.
