How English Clubs Qualify for the UEFA Champions League and Europa League
English clubs can qualify for UEFA competitions through their Premier League position, domestic cup results and European title wins. The usual allocation includes four Champions League places, although extra places can be earned in some seasons. UEFA introduced a 36-team Champions League league phase in 2024/25, replacing the former group-stage format. The two best-performing leagues in UEFA’s coefficient rankings can receive an additional Champions League place. For the 2025/26 season, England’s extra place allowed fifth-placed Newcastle United to qualify for the Champions League. Tottenham Hotspur also qualified after winning the Europa League, taking the number of English teams in the competition to six.
