37 Miners Died in NSCDC Custody: Government Must Deliver Justice and Reform
A federal committee has found that 33 miners died in NSCDC custody in Niger State after being held in overcrowded conditions with poor ventilation, intense heat and inadequate access to water. The panel said the deaths were preventable and that officers reportedly failed to respond to repeated distress calls. The findings demand more than public condemnation. People in state custody retain their right to life, humane treatment and due process, regardless of the allegations against them. Those found responsible should face a transparent investigation and prosecution where evidence establishes criminal wrongdoing. The committee recommended dismissals, prosecutions and compensation of ₦30 million for each verified death and ₦10 million for each survivor. Authorities should also explain the difference between the initial figure of 37 deaths and the 33 deaths verified by the committee. Compensation, support for survivors and bereaved families, regular inspections of detention centres, and clear emergency procedures must follow. This tragedy must lead to accountability and reforms that prevent another avoidable death in custody.
