Nigerian-Trained Doctor Struck Off UK Register Over False NHS Job Applications

A Nigerian-trained doctor, Dr Stephen Igwe, has been removed from the UK medical register after a tribunal found he made false claims in several NHS job applications. The tribunal heard that he falsely claimed to have graduated with distinction, overstated his previous NHS role and listed a junior colleague as a senior referee without consent. He also denied being under investigation by the General Medical Council in later applications. Dr Igwe later admitted the allegations and withdrew his claim that a “virtual assistant” had caused the errors. The tribunal also found serious shortcomings in his prescribing, emergency-response and neonatal-care skills, which it said could put patients at risk. The case has sparked criticism over professional integrity and concern that such conduct could affect how Nigerian-trained applicants are viewed abroad.
