Anambra Education Ministry Urges Teachers to Strengthen Pupils’ Reading Skills

Schools across Anambra State resumed for the 2026/2027 academic session after the six-week vacation, as the Ministry of Education monitored attendance and compliance in Awka. During a visit to Udodinma Primary School, Nodu-Okpuno, the governor’s education aide urged teachers to prioritise reading and pronunciation skills. She said pupils who cannot read simple words and sentences may struggle to understand examination questions and progress academically. Teachers were encouraged to use group reading, peer support and competitions to make reading more engaging. Head teachers were also asked to assess educators by how well pupils can read and write, not only by their lesson notes. The school recorded 28 new enrolments, but its headmistress said a shortage of teachers remains a major challenge after several staff members were transferred without replacements.
