Cassava Farmers Raise Alarm as Farm-Gate Prices Crash in Ogun and Oyo

Cassava merchants and value-chain actors in Ogun and Oyo have urged the Federal Government to intervene after a sharp fall in farm-gate prices left many farmers unable to recover production costs. The association said the price of raw cassava reportedly dropped from about ₦220,000 per tonne to as low as ₦5,000. It warned that the decline could discourage farmers from planting and threaten the sustainability of cassava production. The group called for pricing mechanisms that reflect the cost of land preparation, planting, labour, harvesting and transport. It also requested better links between farmers and industrial processors, suitable credit terms for cassava's 10-to-14-month cycle, stronger cooperatives and decentralised processing facilities. It added that it would promote high-yielding, disease-resistant cassava varieties to improve productivity and returns for farmers.
