South Africa Seeks Reimbursement From Nigeria Over Migrant Repatriation Costs
South Africa has asked Nigeria, Malawi and Ethiopia to reimburse expenses linked to the repatriation and deportation of migrants. Officials say almost $18 million was spent on transport, temporary centres and staff overtime. Home Affairs says 82,875 people have been voluntarily repatriated or deported since tensions over illegal migration intensified. However, figures from some migrants' home countries place the number closer to 178,000. The request comes amid anti-migrant protests and violence in South Africa. Authorities say they will intensify operations against illegal migration after arresting nearly 60,000 undocumented persons, including 16,208 in July.
