Malawian Woman Jailed 14 Years for Setting Brother’s House Ablaze Over Bamboo Dispute
A court in Dedza, Malawi, has sentenced a 44-year-old woman to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for setting her brother’s house on fire after a dispute over bamboo. Prosecutors said the dispute began after the brother allegedly cut bamboo from her garden without permission. Later that night, she went to his home, confronted him and allegedly set the house ablaze with grass while he was asleep inside. The victim suffered burn injuries and reported the incident to police. The court said the attack was deliberate and avoidable, and imposed the sentence to deter similar offences.
