Akwa Ibom Court Hangs Man for Killing Uncle Over Witchcraft Allegations
A 27-year-old from Ikot Obioro, Eket, has been sentenced to death by hanging for murdering his uncle over claims of witchcraft. The Akwa Ibom State High Court in Eket found Edinyanga Samuel Akpan guilty of stabbing Kufre Godwin Eno to death on December 4, 2017. The victim was rushed to Emmanuel General Hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival. After nine years of legal proceedings, Justice Pius Idiong ruled the act intentional and unlawful. He explained that, under Nigerian law, murder is a capital offence and no lesser sentence could be imposed. The prosecution was led by the State’s Ministry of Justice, while Victor Udeh, Esq., represented the defendant. The judge prayed for mercy on the convict’s soul as he handed down the sentence.
