Why South-East Students Are Hesitant to Apply for NELFUND Loans
Students and parents across Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi say delayed disbursements, irregular upkeep allowances and uncertainty about repayment are discouraging many from applying for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). Students at UNN, ESUT, SUMAS, NAU, COOU and Federal Polytechnic Oko also cited poor awareness, application and verification difficulties, weak internet access, and fear of graduating with debt. Some parents said they would rather struggle to pay fees than have their children take a loan. Institutions such as COOU and NAU say sensitisation and dedicated NELFUND support desks have increased applications. Beneficiaries in Ebonyi described the interest-free scheme as a lifeline, but students and school officials want faster processing, clearer repayment information and consistent payment of monthly upkeep allowances.
