House Lawmaker Urges Tinubu to Suspend NYSC Overhaul Pending Wider Consultations

House Lawmaker Urges Tinubu to Suspend NYSC Overhaul Pending Wider Consultations

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives has called on President Tinubu to suspend the proposed NYSC reforms until they undergo broader stakeholder consultations. He highlighted the NYSC’s role in fostering unity since 1973 and warned that rapid changes could weaken its core mission. Key proposals include a three-phase orientation camp, 11 specialised career streams, stronger skills acquisition, locally produced uniforms, and appointing a civilian Director-General. Mixed reactions have followed the reform plan. The lawmaker stressed that military leadership has maintained discipline and patriotism, and urged the president to set up a review committee with security experts, former NYSC officials, youth groups, and legislators before implementing any changes.
