Parents in Peru Flock to Name Babies After Erling Haaland Amid Norway’s World Cup Run

Parents in Peru Flock to Name Babies After Erling Haaland Amid Norway’s World Cup Run

Erling Haaland’s stellar goals at the 2026 World Cup have inspired parents in Peru to register hundreds of newborns with his name. According to Peru’s national registry, 468 children now carry the name Haaland, and 91 have the full name Erling Haaland. The trend gained pace as Norway advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will meet England this weekend. RENIEC officials say football stars often shape naming choices, noting a spike in registrations each time Haaland found the net in Qatar. Football-inspired names are already widespread in Peru. Over 3,400 people are named Messi, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal have also left their mark. But Neymar remains the most popular, with nearly 34,000 namesakes in official records.

The sudden spike to 468 children named Haaland seems more of a marketing buzz than genuine cultural shift to me.

I'm not convinced every parent sees this as homage; maybe some just follow trends without deeper meaning.

If you're expecting soon, pick a name you love, not just the hottest footballer's, and consider long-term fit.
