Aceh Woman Collapses After 100 Public Lashes for Unmarried Sex
A woman fainted after receiving 100 lashes in Banda Aceh under the province’s strict Sharia code for having sex outside marriage. She and her partner were each caned by an officer dressed head-to-toe in brown covering. Unmarried couples in Aceh face public caning for offences ranging from gambling and alcohol to sexual relations outside marriage. Witnesses say the man grimaced as he took his punishment while the woman had to be carried away. Earlier this year, another couple in Aceh received 140 lashes—100 for sex outside marriage and 40 for drinking alcohol—and the woman also fainted during the public caning. Authorities, including the head of Sharia police, have emphasised that no one is exempt from these penalties. Aceh remains the only region in Indonesia that enforces Sharia law in this way, drawing criticism from human rights groups over its harsh public punishment practices.
