How to Identify Illegal Online Universities in East Africa
East African countries each maintain their own lists of approved universities. Many unaccredited institutions market themselves as “international” or “online” but lack local regulator approval. In Kenya, the Commission for University Education’s 2025/2026 blacklist names 16 illegal operators. Highlights include “Bradgate International University” in Nyeri, “Northwestern Christian University” in Kakamega (raided for issuing fake degrees), and several unapproved theological colleges across various counties. Common warning signs include no local accreditation, claims of only foreign accreditation, purely online delivery without a campus or interim authority letter, and rapiddegree programmes completed in months. Regulators in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan follow similar patterns. To verify an institution, check your country’s regulator list, confirm eligibility for national service or government jobs, and look for a physical campus plus interim authority documents. Share any specific university names to have them checked against approved lists.
