Sanwo-Olu Dismisses Coastal Road Blame, Says Lagos’ Coastal Nature Guarantees Some Flooding

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has rejected claims that the new Coastal Road caused the city’s recent floods. He explained that Lagos’ coastal geography means it will always see some flooding during heavy rains. He urged Nigerians to avoid misleading social media images of flood peaks without showing how quickly waters recede. The governor pointed to poor waste disposal and blocked drains as the main urban flood triggers. He made the remarks during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.

It sounds like a convenient excuse; perhaps better drainage plans should take priority over coastal terrain explanation.

Upgrading sewers and clearing channels before the rainy season could reduce flooding more effectively than debating road construction.
