Power Minister Admits Many Nigerians Still Lack Reliable Electricity
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has acknowledged that many Nigerians are yet to experience reliable electricity despite ongoing reforms in the sector. He said the government has focused on resolving long-standing generation, transmission and distribution problems. Measures cited include restoring the 375MW Alaoji power plant in Abia, expanding transmission capacity in Lagos and Abuja, and deploying more than 350,000 meters after a dispute involving distributors and manufacturers was resolved. Tegbe said efforts were also underway to address the sector’s debt burden, improve grid stability, make billing more accurate and resolve consumer complaints faster. He added that the Federal Government has no plan to increase electricity tariffs. The minister said progress would take sustained effort and admitted that many households have not yet felt the impact of the reforms.
