Atiku Slams Jilli Market Airstrike as ‘Devastating Failure’, Demands Accountability
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the airstrike on Jilli market along the Borno–Yobe border as a “devastating failure”. He warned the operation has shaken public confidence and called for urgent accountability. He noted that over 56 traders are feared dead and 14 others hospitalised. Atiku criticised the trend of civilians being caught in the crossfire during counter-insurgency operations and asked, “How long will citizens remain unsafe from both terrorists and the very forces meant to protect them?” Atiku compared this incident to international standards, citing a recent US rescue mission where huge resources were used to save a single life. He urged a full review of military tactics and stronger safeguards to prevent future tragedies. He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The Nigerian Air Force confirmed it conducted precision strikes under Operation HADIN KAI on April 11 but did not comment on civilian casualties.
