PENGASSAN Ends Direct Presidential Elections With Automatic Succession Rule

PENGASSAN Ends Direct Presidential Elections With Automatic Succession Rule

PENGASSAN has amended its constitution to end direct contests for the union’s presidency. Under the new framework, an elected deputy president will automatically succeed the president at the end of each tenure. President Festus Osifo said the reform, approved in August 2025, is intended to reduce rivalry and prevent the internal disputes that often accompany leadership transitions. He said the union adopted aspects of the succession model used by ICAN after reviewing systems in other professional bodies. Osifo said the change has helped maintain stability ahead of PENGASSAN’s next delegates’ conference, scheduled for August 22, 2026. The union expects the new arrangement to keep its leadership focused on members’ welfare and oil-sector labour issues rather than prolonged election contests.
