Legal Briefing Challenges the Law Used in Nnamdi Kanu’s Conviction
A legal briefing has challenged the statutory basis of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s November 2025 conviction. It argues that the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2011, as amended in 2013, had been repealed by the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 before the judgment was delivered. The briefing argues that the court should have considered the corresponding provisions of the 2022 law. It also distinguishes between the law in force when an alleged offence occurred and the written law required to support a conviction when judgment is given. It further contends that transitional provisions preserving ongoing proceedings did not revive the repealed statute. The arguments may be tested at the appellate courts, which will ultimately determine the legality of the conviction.
