UN Warns as Displacement in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Reaches 4 Million
The United Nations says about four million people have been forcibly displaced across Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger as violence and cross-border insecurity worsen in the Central Sahel. A UN refugee agency official said security incidents in the region have nearly doubled since 2020. The crisis is straining schools, healthcare, water supplies and livelihoods, while also limiting humanitarian access. The agency said children and young people face serious risks. Only around one-third of refugee children can access primary or secondary education, despite people under 25 making up most of the region’s population. In Koro, near the Mali-Burkina Faso border, about 85,000 displaced people have arrived in a community of roughly 100,000 residents. The UN called for stronger humanitarian funding, security efforts and long-term investments, warning that the crisis could worsen regional instability and migration pressures affecting West Africa, including Nigeria.
