UMass Amherst Chef Honoured as ‘Chef of the Year’ Charged with Wife’s Murder
A 36-year-old UMass Amherst executive sous chef has been arrested and charged with murdering his wife inside a campus hotel room on April 22. Police report that Jeffrey MacDonald admitted to using his hands, feet and other objects to kill his 31-year-old wife, Emma MacDonald, in their room at the Campus Center hotel. Officers who responded around 7:40pm encountered a violent struggle before subduing him and discovering her body. University officials reassured staff that there was no ongoing threat on campus. The chancellor described the incident as heartbreaking and said updates would be limited to protect the investigation. MacDonald was arraigned on first-degree murder and assault charges. He pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bail pending a competency evaluation and a May 22 hearing.
