First Niger Bridge Reopening Delayed by One Week Over Rainfall

The Federal Government has postponed the reopening of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, by one week after rehabilitation work was delayed by persistent rainfall. The bridge, which was closed on September 7 for urgent maintenance, was initially expected to reopen on September 21. Officials said flooding washed away parts of the completed work, while poor lighting also affected night operations. The new reopening date is September 28, subject to at least three days of dry weather. Motorists and commuters have been advised to continue using the Second Niger Bridge until the repairs are completed and inspected.
