Scientists Find Unknown Alloy Formed in Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Fireball

Scientists have identified a previously unknown metal alloy in microscopic radioactive fallout from the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The material was found in glassy particles known as hiroshimaite, recovered from beach sand in Hiroshima Bay. Researchers believe it formed inside the nuclear fireball, where intense heat vaporised steel, glass, soil and other building materials before they cooled rapidly. The tiny grain contains elements commonly used in stainless steel, including iron, chromium and nickel. However, its atoms formed an unfamiliar crystal structure that did not match known alloys. The researchers reported that the extreme conditions of the blast created the new multicomponent material. The discovery may help scientists understand how matter behaves under extraordinary heat and pressure, while also revealing that more unusual materials could remain in Hiroshima's microscopic fallout debris.
