Healthcare Access Ranking Puts Enugu, Anambra and Abia in Nigeria’s Top 16
A 2026 healthcare-access ranking places Enugu 10th with 46.1 points, Anambra 11th with 45.7, and Abia 16th with 43.2. Lagos led the table with 56.3, followed by the FCT and Ogun. The ranking considers facility density, health-insurance coverage, doctor-to-population ratio, immunisation and maternal-health outcomes. The result puts renewed focus on healthcare delivery in the South-East. Ebonyi was not among the 16 states listed, despite reported investments in primary healthcare centres, boreholes, health workers and diagnostic equipment. The key issue is whether capital allocations and projects are being implemented well enough to improve access for residents. Anambra’s position reflects both earlier investments in health institutions and ongoing projects, including general hospitals, primary healthcare centres and a trauma centre. The ranking also highlights strong representation from South-South states such as Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Edo. Healthcare progress should be measured by services people can actually use. Functional primary health centres, skilled personnel, reliable equipment, insurance coverage and maternal care matter more than project announcements alone.
