Keeping Ibusa Identity Alive: A Call to Parents and Community Leaders
I am concerned that many Ibusa youths, especially those raised outside the community, cannot identify their Idumu or Ogbe. This disconnect makes it harder for them to understand their family lineage, build community relationships and develop a lasting sense of belonging. Parents should deliberately teach their children about Ibusa history, traditions, family roots and cultural values. Bringing children home regularly can help them meet relatives, visit ancestral homes and experience community life firsthand. Young people should also be encouraged to join Ibusa associations, youth forums and community-development activities. Traditional institutions, town unions, religious bodies and youth organisations must create programmes that promote cultural education, leadership, sports, entrepreneurship and intergenerational dialogue. Ibusa identity will not be preserved by words alone. We must take practical steps to ensure every Ibusa child, wherever they live, knows their Idumu, Ogbe and connection to the community.
