Dear Sons: Learn a Trade While Pursuing University Part-Time
I believe young men should consider learning a practical skill or trade after secondary school, while pursuing university through part-time or weekend programmes where possible. With graduate jobs difficult to find in Nigeria, I think it is risky to depend on a degree alone. The money and time spent on full-time study can also support vocational training, an apprenticeship or a small business. Examples from technology and business show that skills, initiative and experience can create opportunities outside the traditional degree route. However, this should not discourage students whose chosen careers require full-time university training, such as medicine and other regulated professions. My advice is to build marketable skills early, gain real work experience and treat a university degree as one part of a wider career plan.
