Tensions in South Africa Drive 100,000 Zimbabweans and 17 Liberians Back Home
Several African governments have launched repatriation programmes for citizens facing unrest in South Africa. Liberia’s first group of 17 nationals landed at Roberts International Airport after requesting help to leave due to growing fears for their safety. The effort was coordinated by the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Zimbabwe has assisted almost 100,000 nationals to return home. Malawi repatriated about 38,000 in one month, while Uganda brought back roughly 1,100. Hundreds more from Ghana, Nigeria and Mozambique have also left amid rising anti-immigrant protests. Many migrants had built lives, sent remittances and supported families across the continent before deciding to return. The ongoing tensions highlight the challenges foreign nationals face in South Africa.
