Can Obidients Win 2027 Without Embracing Nigeria’s Hardball Politics?
Having watched elections since 2023, I believe Obidients should reconsider the idea of fielding Peter Obi in 2027. In my view, they may need to collapse their structure and support another candidate because Obi cannot win a presidential election under Nigeria’s current political system. The recent Osun election reinforces this view for me. It appeared to be a contest of vote buying, intimidation and violence, with federal and state actors allegedly backing opposing sides. Reports of deaths across the state also show how dangerous election periods can become. How can a candidate who refuses to spend money or embrace political violence compete in an environment like this? Obi may prefer peace, but Nigerian politics often appears to reward a different approach.
