Nigeria Must Clear Retirees’ Outstanding Pensions and Gratuities

I am calling on the Federal Government, state governments, the National Assembly and pension authorities to urgently address delayed pensions and gratuities owed to retired public servants. After decades of service, many retirees still face long waits, financial hardship, illness and uncertainty over benefits they earned. Retirement should bring dignity, not repeated visits to offices, unpaid medical bills or dependence on relatives. Pension and gratuity payments are legal entitlements, not favours. Families of workers who die in service should also receive their lawful benefits without unnecessary delays. I urge the government to publish verified outstanding pension liabilities and adopt a transparent, time-bound payment plan. Elderly, sick and vulnerable retirees should be prioritised. Authorities should also investigate credible allegations of bribery, extortion and illegal deductions in pension processing, while protecting retirees who report wrongdoing. Nigeria must treat retired workers with fairness, urgency and humanity. Those who spent their productive years serving the country deserve to live their later years with security and respect.
