NiMet Issues Flash Flood Alert for Eight Coastal States as Heavy Rain Approaches

NiMet Issues Flash Flood Alert for Eight Coastal States as Heavy Rain Approaches

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency warns residents in Lagos and other coastal states to prepare for possible flash floods on Tuesday, June 30. Continuous downpours are expected across southern Nigeria, with the highest risk in Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Light rain and morning thunderstorms will give way to heavier showers later in the day. Northern states such as Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Yobe, Gombe, and Kebbi can expect moderate rain and storms. The Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, and Benue will see cloudy skies in the morning, followed by afternoon thunderstorms. Residents should avoid walking or driving through floodwaters and keep clear of tall trees during storms. Motorists are urged to drive with caution in low visibility. Airline operators are advised to secure airport-specific weather updates to ensure safe flight operations.

Just watching weather updates won't stop those floods. We need community clean-ups to clear blocked drains before warnings arrive.

Keep sandbags by your door, clear nearby drains of debris, and assemble an emergency kit well before Tuesday's downpour.
